Encased Mavericks
By Bob Perdue #5
Greetings to all! This will be the initial encased maverick column. Your participation is requested. The format used by ACE to describe encased is much different than the one used by Norman Peterson in the regular maverick section of Talkn’ Tokens. As this format seemed to be popular and we had considerable participation by the membership I would like to continue that same format. I think it’s best to use this space to explain the format that will be used.
How To Submit a Maverick Encased For Identification:
The process for describing an encased begins with the back of the encased. This is the side with the advertising or subject. In all most all cases the back (tails) of the coin will be visible on this side. The wording is broken with a slash (/) just as in regular tokens. Also when moving from the back to the front a double slash (//) is used to indicate that just as in tokens. If an encased appears to have had a hole added when it was made then the hole is noted as (hole). If it appears the hole was added after the manufacture then that information is not included. The front side will most usually have the heads or front of the coin and a good luck slogan on it. It is redundant to list these same good luck slogans in a series of listings, so it is an accepted practice to abbreviate these. There are many such good luck slogans and phrases, but the four you will see most and their abbreviations are:
Keep Me and Never Go Broke / I Bring / Good Luck – kmangb / ib / gl or kmangb / ibgl
Keep Me and Never Go Broke – kmangb
Keep Me and You Will Have Good Luck – kmaywhgl
Keep Me and You Will / Have / Good Luck – kmayw / h / gl
There are other abbreviations that will pop up from time to time, but these are surely the most common. In cases of odd or unusual slogans I will just put them in long hand to avoid confusion.
After the good luck slogan you will find the date and mintmark (if any)
Next come the shapes. While there are many shapes certainly the two most common are round (rd) and horseshoe (hs). I have also seen catalogers simply use an (h) to describe the horseshoe shape and describe the round with a (r). This is also acceptable. Other common shapes are.
Wishbone – WB Bell - BL
Chamber pot – CP Fob – Fob
A complete description of an encased coin would look like this.
Bob’s Book Store / 1811 Main Street / Anywhere, (hole) USA // kmangb / ib / gl, 1974D, HS
The portion of the description that precedes the double slash (//) is taken from the back of the encased. Followed by the abbreviated good luck slogan taken from the front. Then the date, mintmark and shape of the encased are included in the description.
ACE began in 1995 and this was the format used to describe encased in the earliest issues of The Casement I doubt it began with ACE and suspect it was in use way before then.
A few things to note: Certainly there are other denominations of coins used in encasements besides pennies. These are so infrequent that I choose to note them when they occur rather than to make rules for them. The same is true of the material used to make the encasements out of. Aluminum is far and away the most commonly used material. When something other than that is used it should be noted. If the material is not listed it can be assumed it is aluminum. Be sure to include all information on the encased commas, periods and other punctuation marks are needed for proper descriptions. Encased that are heavily worn with illegible wording are poor subjects for identifications. As are encased with replaced cents. Complete information is needed for proper identification. A true 1901 encased that has had a 1955 penny placed into it will be harder to identify correctly than the original. Use your best judgment on these types of submissions. Email is far and away the preferred method of contact. This allows me to copy and paste the information I receive. It also saves the sender postage. If you are writing by regular mail and expect a response to your letter please include an SASE.
Other catalogers have chosen to incorporate much more elaborate methods of describing encased. These descriptions can include the location of the cent and other information. I commend these efforts, but choose to keep things as simple as possible. The purpose of this column is to identify mavericks and not establish new varieties. It is not necessary to know if an encased is 35 or 38mm in order to identify it. I feel I can gain more participation on the subject by using the simplest approach possible. If you do choose to submit new mavericks in an alternative form that is fine, as a rule I copy and paste these as they are submitted to help avoid the all too common typos.
What Will An Identification Look Like?
Here is an actual identification taken from an old issue of The Casement. What will follow is an explanation of the format used.
VA-BR-1077-29 - Fashion Furniture Brunson’s – Hendersonville, NC (2) – Bob Perdue – Listed as Brunson Furniture Co., Inc. in the 1955 D&B. It indicates this was a furniture store and began in 1947.
VA-BR-1077-29 – This is the catalog number used to identify this encased. I’m not a believer in a confusing numbering system. One must be used to establish a reference though. At ACE we began with the two-letter abbreviation of the state that the maverick was submitted from. In some cases this is very useful information. If the encased includes a persons name the social security death index may be searched for information. If it is the name of a business then there are many secretary of state web sites that allow you to search for former and current business names. What will follow the state abbreviation will be something simple such as the issue of Talkn’ Tokens that the maverick appears in and also the numerical position it occupied in that column. A complete catalog number would be as simple as IN – 79 – 5.
Fashion Furniture Brunson’s – This is the subject from the encased. Refer to the catalog number for a complete description.
Hendersonville, NC – This is the city and state the maverick has been identified to.
(2) – This is a number used to indicate the certainty of the information used to identify the encased. At ACE we had considerable confusion over the certainty of identifications. I sent around an email to active members and asked them for their participation in developing a system where the user could tell at a glance how certain the probability of the information used was. Here is what we came up with:
(1) Possible - In order to attain this rating there must be some credible information submitted to identify the maverick. This may include personal experience or the word of another. The main point here is that no historical references are cited .If a reference is cited the information isn’t a match to the wording on the encased. These types of identifications are encouraged, as other members may be able to take limited information and make it more positive.
(2) Probable - This rating must include substantial information. This is actually where many of our ** proof positive identifications fall. These are identifications that are based on a reference book or information taken from other sources, but do not identify a maverick to a specific address or other secondary information that is included in the wording on the encased. It is important to not only consider the source of the information being used, but also the wording on the encased itself. Encased with general wording such, as “Joe’s Auto Sales” and with no secondary information such as address or phone number should never be considered proof positive.
(3) Positive - These are the true proof positive identifications. The encased itself has secondary information included in the wording on it and the source used to identify it includes a match of this information. Are there exceptions? Yes, I’m sure there will be. There will be listings for very unusual or uniquely named businesses. When working with these types of listings some judgment will need to be used and it may be possible to identify these without matching the secondary information. There will also be cases where the subject has been researched extensively and the information is positive enough without secondary information included.
Is this a positive method for establishing certainty? Of course not! We will still have our share of confusion. The same entry may well be identified at the (2) level to two different locations with equal credence. This system is easy to apply and is certainly a step in the right direction. Once again other catalogers that have developed more elaborate systems of establishing certainty. My thinking is that even if you develop a numbering system of 1 – 100 and establish criteria for each number you are still going to have cases where the user splits hairs to determine accuracy. I choose to invoke the primary rule of simplicity and use the 1-3 system. This seems to have worked well for ACE.
Bob Perdue – This is the persons name submitting the information. When multiple people submit information only the most credible information will be used. Others will be listed as contributors only.
Listed as Brunson Furniture Co., Inc., in the 1955 D&B. It indicates this was a furniture store and began in 1947. – This is the information taken from a reference book that was used to identify the encased. At ACE we allowed for a brief explanation of the identification. This is very insightful to the user and will be continued so far as space considerations allow. Lengthy identifications with significant interest might well be better submitted to the editor and used as articles.
I hope all of this is clear. If not, feel free to email with any relevant questions. If you are working on a cataloging project and I can help in any way feel free to ask.
New Mavericks To Identify;
Keep in mind the first two letters would be the abbreviation of the state the entry was submitted from. This may be of some help in identification.

Talkn' Tokens April 2004
Greeting to all and many thanks to the members who participated in the initial encased maverick column. Of the 24 mavericks that were listed for identification 21 were identified. That is a great beginning. I would just like to encourage all members to participate. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated by all. In almost every issue of Talkn’ Tokens there is a request for contributions from the membership. If you don’t have the talent to write a feature article just doing something so small as identifying a maverick may benefit another member. You should expect to see this column again in July, happy collecting until then.
New Identifications
(1) possible (2) probable (3) positive
PA-86-1-Class 67 / Dale Carnegie - Garden City, NY (1) – Bob Perdue – In all likelihood this was issued by a specific graduating class of the Dale Carnegie Institute and should not be identified. Dale Carnegie died in 1955. By 1967 his sales approaches had become incorporated and known as the Dale Carnegie Institute with several references found on the Internet to this being headquartered in NYC. I found a book from the Dale Carnegie Institute for sale. The books inside cover states published by Dale Carnegie & Associates, Inc 1475 Franklin Avenue Garden City, NY.
LA-86-2 - The Edwards Co. –
Newport News, VA. (2) – Page Mann – Page sends along information to say that his
source for this identification is the 1952 D&B and that there is also another
encased from this same merchant with the description: THE EDWARDS CO., INC. /
KEROSENE-COAL-HEATING OILS /
DIAL 5-1234 //KMAHGL/IB/GL 1954D, HS.
NH-86-3 - 1924 / Elk’s Kiddies Day – Chicago, IL (2) – I suppose any Elk’s lodge in any city may have had a kiddie’s day. I think it is then only possible to identify this to the headquarters. The Grand Lodge national headquarters of the B.P.O.E. are located at 2750 N. Lakeview Avenue, Chicago.
PA-86-4–Fourroux Shoe Co. – Huntsville, AL (2) – Ron Mui – Ron sent along the links to several web sites showing that the Fourroux Shoe Co. has been in business there since 1955.
TN-86-5- Jean Frocks - NY,
NY (2) – Jim Lawniczak - The NY DOS information shows that Jean Frocks Inc. was
a NJ corporation with address of 518 8th Ave. NYC. It was registered in 1941.
Jean Frocks Inc. is listed in my 1953 D & B under NYC, coded 56 21 (retail
women's wear). There is no date code meaning that it was founded before 1943. I
believe this is sufficient to identify the corporate headquarters to NYC.
CA-86-6- Sam Fox Publishing Co. – NY, NY (2) – Jim Lawniczak - Sam Fox
Publishing Co. published sheet music, beginning operations in Cleveland around
1906. Sometime in the 1940s, operations moved to New York City and stayed there
until the business would down as the founders and their children grew old and
died. It remained an Ohio corporation qualified to do business in New York,
according to the NY and Ohio secretaries of state websites. It was listed in
Cleveland in my 1947 Dun & Bradstreet, but as a branch of New York City (in all
the D & Bs it is listed under "F" for Fox). It was listed in NYC and not
Cleveland in the 1953, 1955 and 1958 D & Bs. As it was headquartered in NYC in
1956 when this piece came out, NYC is the proper attribution.
Others submitting information on this entry: John Mutch.
MN-87-7- Grand Marais State Bank – Grand Marais, MN (2) – John Mutch – John sent me information from a web site showing the location of the bank as on the north side of Hwy. 61 in Grand Marais, next to the Grand Marais Post Office.
Others submitting information on this entry: Marshall Bieniasz, Jim Lawniczak, and Al Zaika.
OH-87-8 -Hi-Tread Service – Cleveland, Ohio (1) – Jim Lawniczak - In my 1953 Cleveland city directory, which contains a cross reference, Pocahontas Oil Corp. is listed at 4424 Payne Ave. Pocahontas is listed in the 1947 and 1950 Cleveland D & B, in the oil, gas and accessories business. So, a gas station was at 4424 Payne Ave. in Cleveland during the relevant period. The only other cities I could see with 4424 Payne Ave. on Expedia were Dayton and Minneapolis. Nothing is listed under "Hi-Tread Service" in the 1950 Dayton phone directory. There is no "Hi-Tread" listed to Minneapolis in either the 1940 or 1953 D & B. Maybe a 1+ or a 2 if you stretch?
IN-87-9- Jimchucks Rest. – Columbus, Ohio (3) – Ron Mui - Now, here’s a neat one. I found an online directory from 1951 for Columbus, Ohio that lists this piece as a sandwich shop at the very address stated on the inscription. It belongs to Columbus, Ohio.
CA-87-10 - IT'S LUCKY TO HAVE A CHARGE ACCOUNT AT KADIS' - No entries on this one. I believe this was a department store in the western part of the United States, but wasn’t able to find other information
KS-87-11 - David W. Lanier, Mayor / Dyersburg – Dyersburg, TN (3) – John Mutch – John sent along information from a web site showing that Mr. Lanier actually had criminal charges brought against him while still in office.
Others submitting information on this listing: Ron Mui, Jim Lawniczak
IL-87-12 -James H. Lawley / Alderman – Chicago, IL (3) – John Mutch – John sent along information from a web site showing that James H. Lawley, Jr. died in 1925 and was a lawyer, and served as Chicago alderman and a trustee of the Sanitary District.
FL-87-13 – Madisonville Sesquicentennial - Kunkel Apothecary- Cincinnati, Ohio (2) – Bob Perdue -Actually Madisonville is a district within Cincinnati and the Kunkel Pharmacy is listed in my 1955 D&B.
IL-86-14 - Midlothian State Bank – Midlothian, IL (1) – Ron Mui - I did not actually find a listing for this bank but through a process of elimination I did discover this. Although I found as many as three cities called Midlothian (TX, VA, and IL), the only Midlothian with the 388 prefix for phone numbers was Midlothian, Illinois. Furthermore, the only reference that I could find to "Midlothian State Bank" in the Google search engine was in an obituary at this web site. The Obituary was for a Chicago man named Ollie James Yates. Look under his name at this site.
FL-86-15 - HOTEL MILLIGAN BAR / Headquarters For / Johnston’s Candies – no submissions here either. This will be extremely hard to make certain. Not only will you need to find a Hotel Milligan, but one that sold Johnston’s candy.
NH-86-16 - AR-Neil Home Imp. Co. – Philadelphia, PA (3) – Bob Perdue – This is listed with the same address and phone number in the 1949 Philadelphia phone book.
OK-86-17- NRECA INSURANCE – Washington D.C. (3) – Bob Perdue – Actually the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association is a current company and headquartered in Arlington VA. I took the time to email them though and Ron Clark wrote back to say that NRECA was at 1711 Connecticut Avenue, N. W. in 1947 and had 736 member co-ops.
Others submitting information on this entry: John Mutch,
FL-86-18- Plainville Coin & Hobby Club - No takers on this one either. There are many Plainville’s; it may be hard to find the specific one that had a coin club.
CA-86-19 - JNO. Robertson Chevrolet – Coronado, CA (2) – This is in the California encased catalog. The source is the 1953 D&B.
IN-86-20- Rubenstein’s – Springfield, MO (2) – Bob Perdue – This is listed as Rubenstein’s Store Inc. in the 1955 D&B. It also indicates this was a family clothing store.
NC-86-21 - The Scottish Bank – China Grove, NC (2) – Al Zaika – Al’s source is the 1957 Polk’s Bank Directory.
Lumberton, NC (2) – Bob Perdue. In looking at the 1955 D&B it’s obvious that there were branches of this bank in both cities, however the China Grove listing refers you to Lumberton for details. From that I assume that the Lumberton branch was the HQ? Does anyone have more information?
OR-86-22- H. Simon & Sons - Meat Market – Portland, OR (1) – This is actually pictured on page 46 of issue 22 of The Casement (encased magazine). It is attributed to Portland without a source.
MI-86-23- Stony Island -Chrysler / Plymouth – Chicago, IL (3) – Bob Perdue – This is listed with the same address and phone number that are on the encased in the 1944 Chicago classified phone book.
KY-86-24- Vine Grove Dept. Store – Vine Grove, KY (2) – Al Zaika - Al says he searched in several atlases and the only state he can find with a city named Vine Grove is Kentucky. After Al sent me this information I checked and there is a Vine Grove Department store listed in the 1955 D&B.
New Mavericks to Identify:

Comments and Corrections:
In the April Talkin' Tokens you have an OR-86-22 H. Simon & Sons - Meat Market as from Portland, OR without a source. I have been provided a photocopy of a 1921 Nebraska Directory from Roger L. Winkelhake that lists H. Simon & Sons -- Meat in North Platte, NE. This information came to light in the last month. I am listing the piece in the Nebraska Listings. Hopefully, this is helpful. This is from Steve Drake.
There is also a new encased club on line. This has a free membership and is open to all collectors. The web address is: http://www.encasedcollectorsinternational.org/. I sometimes think it is easier just to use a search engine such as Google and search for Encased Collectors International than it is to try and type in all of the dots and slashes. If you have trouble finding this email me and I’ll send you the link.
I have also received word from Jerry Binsfeld that the former encased club ACE (Associated Collectors of Encased) has officially folded. I noticed that this club is still listed in the NTCA directory of token clubs that runs periodically in Talkn’ Tokens. That information should be corrected to avoid confusion.
New Identifications;
(1) possible (2) probable (3) positive
WI –89-1 Abbott Jewelers / 1381 Abbott Rd. – No identifications on this entry, but it may eventually be found as it has an address with it.
VA –89-2 Aero Oil Co. – This is a troubling type of maverick. You can search the Internet and find many Aero Oil Companies. Which one issued the encased?
DC –89-3 Belpre High School Band – Belpre, OH (1) - Terry Stahurski – Has sent along information about there being a Belpre, Ohio. According to Expedia there are two Belpre’s in the United States, one in OH and the other in KS. According to the 2000 census the population of Belpre, KS is 104 people while there are 6600 in Belpre, Ohio. It seems OH is much more likely.
VA –89-4 -Bentley’s – Columbus, Ohio (3) – James Lawniczak - Bentleys (no apostrophe) is listed in the white pages of the 1953 Columbus phone book at 172 S. High Street phone FL 4395. It was not listed in the yellow pages under Jewelers but was listed in the yellow pages under clothing, at the same address and phone.
OH – 89-5 Cleveland
Cutter and Reamer Co. – Cleveland, Ohio (2) – Terry Stahurski
- There is a Cleveland Cutter and Reamer Co. listed in the 1937 Cleveland
telephone directory. They are listed at 7410 Madison Ave. Their phone number is
Melrose 4687. I don't have any 1950s directories to check
to see if they have moved between 1937 and when they issued the encased.
Others sending information on this entry – Al Zaika
VA – 89-6 - The E.H. Close Realty Co. – Joel Reznick – Toledo, Ohio (3) – This was identified in issue 6 of The Casement (encased magazine) without source. Then a bit later it was added to the Ohio encased catalog with certain attribution.
MI – 89-7 Con’s Ice Cream -No entries. I did look on the SSDI and found it shows 13 people with the last name of Con. I tried to cross-reference that information with the 1955 D&B, but couldn’t come up with a match.
VA – 89-8 Cooperative Savings and Loan Association – No entries – It’s very easy to find information on businesses by this name in Boston and Wilmington, NC. If you spent more time I’m sure you could come up with many more. Encased so generally named are almost impossible to identify without personal knowledge.
OH –89-9 Fillmore Savings and Loan
Association – Buffalo, NY (3) – James
Lawniczak - The
Polish Co-Operative Savings & Loan Association was chartered on March 29, 1909,
changed its name to Kasa Savings and Loan Association in 1930, then changed its
name again in 1955 to Fillmore Savings and Loan Association. When this piece
was made in 1959, the names matched exactly and Fillmore Savings was indeed
having its 50th Anniversary. It then changed it name again in 1980 to State
Buffalo Savings Bank and was liquidated and its assets bought out by 4 different
banks in 1991.
DC –89-10- CRAMER W. GIBSON / Whistle – West Virginia (1) – Bob Perdue – According to the SSDI there was only one Cramer Gibson (1908 – 1967) and he was from West Virginia. Hopefully this information will help someone else identify this.
TX –89-11 HALLS FAMILY/CLOTHES – No entries – I did get a suggestion that this
was possibly the forerunner of the more famous Robert Halls
clothing stores. This was a national chain of clothing stores.
VA – 89-12 Hart Furniture Co. – Pittsburgh, PA (1) – Vic Nolan has this listed in the PA encased catalog. There is no source given for this information.
OH- 89-13 Home Construction Co. – No entries – This is likely Chicago based on the phone prefix. Does anyone have a 1957 reference book from Chicago to look this up in?
OH – 89-14 - Joyce Shoe Store – Chicago, IL (2) – Bob Perdue – Listed as Joyce Shoe Store in the 1986 D&B. It indicates it is a branch of Feet First Inc.
VA – 89-15 Leaksville Bank & Trust Co. – Leaksville, NC (2) – Al Zaika – Source is the 1947 Polk Bank Directory
MI – 89-16 Compliments Of Edw. Long / City Restaurant - No entries - This goes back to 1910. It’s hard to come up with general information from that era.
OH – 89-17 - Neenah State Bank – Neenah, WI (2) – Thomas Casper - I can tell you that in Jerry Binsfeld's 1992 book, "An Illustrated Guide to Wisconsin Encased Coins", he lists this piece from Neenah State Bank as being from Neenah, Wisconsin. It also has a 1911 cent like the one listed in Talkin' Tokens.
Others with information on this entry – Joel R
OR – 89-18 Parkyakarkus - See article
OH – 89-19 - Pittsburg National Bank – Pittsburg, TX (3) – Dan Agler - I just spent about 45 minutes on the FDIC website. I checked active & inactive banks for all of the Pittsburg/Pittsburgh bank in the US. The only one with a National Bank status and a founding year of 1904 was the one in Pittsburg, Texas. They were established on Jan. 1, 1904, received FDIC Certif. # 3390 on Jan. 1, 1934, & at some point after 1955 became First Heritage Bank, which was merged into First Service Bank on Dec. 14, 1996.
FL-86-18- Plainville Coin & Hobby Club - Plainville, KS (3) – Bill Waken - Plainville is in NW Kansas and put on a pretty good coin & hobby show for several years. It’s a little ole town of 2500 people and really on the "Kansas Plains". They put out wooden nickels for years but only one encased cent.
VA – 89-20 - J. Poehlman & Sons – I have in my notes that Millard Hajek identified this to Baltimore, MD. I don’t have any details other than that.
VA – 89-21- Portsmouth Trust Co. – Portsmouth, NH (2) – Al Zaika – Source is the 1957 Polk Bank Directory.
TX – 89-22-ROGER REYNOLDS – Dallas, Texas (3) – Terry Cross - Roger Reynolds
issued encased cents for at least 7 different dealerships
he worked for in Dallas. I did the identification for the Mockingbird Rambler issue.
As I recall,
I found both phonebook listings of the phone
number as being that of Mockingbird Rambler and a city directory confirmation.
100% certain
each of the Roger Reynolds pieces is from Dallas.
VA – 89-23 Rocky Mount Tire Recappers – Rocky Mount, NC (2) – Bob Perdue – This is listed as Rocky Mount Tire Recappers in the 1955 D&B. It also indicates that this business is associated with E J Fullers Esso Service of Louisburg.
NH - 89-24 -S. Paul Seeders / Beverage Distributor - Pottstown, PA. (2) – Bob Perdue – Listed in the 1955 D&B as S. Paul Seeders. It indicates this was a beer distribution business.
WA – 89-25 United Woolen Mills Co. / 121 Clark St. – No entries – I did get one suggestion that this was from Chicago based on the address. Can anyone look this up?

(For those of you who may nor have noticed the maverick encased column that runs
on the ECI web site is the same maverick column that appeared in The Casement.
When ACE folded I started writing this same column for NTCA and Talkn' Tokens. I
asked for and received permission from NTCA to run this column on the ECI web
site. The purpose in doing this was to allow for the former ACE members that are
not members of NTCA to have access to this column.
By all means if you can identify any of these mavericks please forward me the
information. At the same time if you have unidentified mavericks that you would
like to submit for identification please take the time to do so.
