EDITOR'S NOTES
Elaine Rexdale
#94 |
 |
|
Dear Fellow Collectors:
I have to tell you that I’ve had one Floridian experience after
another in my quest to keep up with my snail mail and Internet
contacts with our ECI members. Here’s just one such incident that
happened recently.
I’m used to the daily
shuffle of our plump (off my garden) curl tailed lizards as I
approach the mailbox. The country-style mailbox is just at the end
of my driveway, not anywhere near the Everglades, but no one
apparently has thought to tell these bold and fast little creatures.
But don’t fret, the lizards and I have made our adjustments: I make
a noise and they scamper…almost all the time. But sometimes there’s
a more experienced guy who doesn’t want to do this dance and who’s
determine to stand his ground.

Cliff Anderson
ECI Member #99 Texas:
I caught up with Cliff (via the Internet
interview) and found he had moved from Louisiana to Texas. There he
has certainly put down some strong numismatic roots and I think you
will agree he has some very interesting things to say about encased
pieces as well as bimetallic. Heres what Cliff had to say:
I now live in San
Antonio, having moved from New Orleans in 2006 after Hurricane
Katrina, but neither moving nor where I live have affected my
numismatic collecting. I began coin collecting seriously in 1995
after retirement from a career in law enforcement.

Jack Smith ECI
Charter Member #49 Indiana: Jack
Smith was born and reared in Indianapolis, IN. For the most part,
he’s been a life-long resident of Indianapolis and where he
currently lives, New Palestine, IN. He told me: “I moved here in
1966 and have had four different addresses in that length of time.”
You have to admit that’s a pretty neat trick. He left the area
during his three years of military service in the U.S. Marine Corp
and again for a period of time while he was working in the Oregon
woods.

RECORD SETTING ENCASED CENT Steve Swingenstein #123 |
|
This 1914D encased cent
issued by the Exchange Bank of Mannington in Mannington, West Virginia
has the distinction of bringing the highest bid of an encased coin ever
auctioned on eBay. Several members have been polled and to the best of
their collective memory this piece may very well be the most valuable
encased with a record selling price of $1,354.00. It was sold on
August 11th by Pine Tree Coins in upstate New York. There were 3 bids
amongst 2 bidders. An AU 1914D cent retails in the $1500.
range thus making this piece a good value.
|
|
The "Bididiots" Cecil
enlightened us about in the last newsletter are at it again.
These 2009D encased Log Cabin & Formative Years cent pair have
sold on eBay recently for (get this) $63.02 ~ $57.00 ~ $46.00 ~
$45.00. The mintage is 500 pair struck by PPM and sold at the
gift shop at the Denver Mint for far less. |

eBay sellers continue
put replaced coin encased up for auction without noting the
fact. These 3 are just a few examples. |

INQUIRIES TO
ECI'S ANSWER MAN by
Jim Lawniczak CM#17 |
|
QUESTION: "What is
the value of on encased Indian head penny with "We Buy Cream Minneapolis
Cold Storage Co." on the back. The front "Good Luck Keep Me And
Prosper"? Richard
ANSWER: "Richard, I
believe that is an Indian cent encased piece. The values of encased
pieces, particularly the more valuable pieces, can fluctuate and vary
from one transaction. The value also depends greatly on condition, and
particularly requires that the cent in the piece be the original cent
that was struck with the piece. That being said, if this piece has an
original cent and is in decent condition with little or no tinpest
(streaky graying on the aluminum) and no staining or problems, I would
expect it to sell in the $75 to $150 range."
QUESTION: "Ohio
encased Ohio coin clubs encased I can find find only find only
Warrenville Bedford Penn Ohio and I think a warren or Youngstown are
there any more Ohio coin club ones hope you come to the state coin club
show oct2 and 3 2009 at holiday inn Rockside OSNA." Allen
ANSWER: "Good
question, I think all the ones you list are correct Ohio encased pieces.
There is a 1964D piece for Southeast Coin Club, Bedford; 1956D Penn Ohio
Coin Clubs, Federal Coin Exchange, Cleveland; 1964 Warrenville Heights
Coin Club, Cleveland; and 1964 and 1964D, Youngstown Numismatic Club.
One piece you didn't mention from Wooster, made in 2002: OH-WOO-WA-30.
1952D, H. Wayne Co. Coin Club 50TH Annual Show// Wooster, Ohio/
1952-2002\\ KMAHGL/ IBGL. Made in 2002 with 1952D cent to commemorate
the first year.
A fairly modern piece was made by the Shelby Coin club of Sidney OH in
early 2000 -- here's what I say about it in the Ohio encased catalog:
OH-SID-SH-10. 1961, 1961D, 2000, 2000D, 1961 Canadian cent, RD,35mm.
Shelby County Coin Club/ [to left of cent] Est. [to right of cent]
1961// Sidney, Ohio\\ KMANGB. Made in 2000 by the Shelby County Coin
Club; member Dan Snider reported that they used five different coins in
the set, 2000 to represent the date of the show, 1961 as the year the
club was founded and a Canadian as some members collected Canadian.
One you don't mention that isn't a traditional aluminum encased piece
is: (OH)-CLE-CO-10. 1967 dime, RD,80mm. Blue cardboard, dime with metal
ring shaped around the dime encased in a small section cut out of the
cardboard in the center, blank rev. For Milady/ Her "Dime 'n Ring"// The
Council of Greater/ Cleveland Coin Clubs Show/ November 1967.
I'll try to come to the October show, please send more info when you
have it."
QUESTION: "I came across an encased that I don't see on the Indiana
list. It has the words "Monon Railroad / 1956 / The Hoosier Line." The
other side has the words "Keep Me And Never Go Broke / I Bring / Good
Luck." It has a 1955-D Lincoln Cent and is horseshoe shaped. Has this
one been previously reported? Regards,
Ken" ANSWER:
"To the best of my knowledge, this is a Chicago maverick, because
corporate headquarters of this railroad (which indeed went through
Indiana) were there." |

POTPOURRI
with Jerry Ferrell #93 |

~Folks we will be encasing
80 2009P Jefferson Nickels in our aluminum Christmas casements in
November. Every year we have a quick sell out and those who hesitate
ordering get miffed when we run out. These scarce nickels have cost us
an arm and a leg and I would not be surprised if they are the only 2009
nickels encased this year or in the future. The price will be $2.99 each
with no ordering limit. Reserve yours now
HERE and I will email
when in stock. ~We
are undecided about whether or not to encased the National Parks
quarters series starting next year. What is your opinion? Email me at
the above link. Our plans for next year is to continuing to encase the
Sac and Presidential dollars. We may encased the new 2010 Lincoln cent
with its new reverse. Jerry |

~I want to thank everyone
for their understanding and patience with my absence for the major part
of August due to my wife's stay at John Hopkins Hospital. The prognosis
is excellent for her full recovery in the weeks ahead.
~We broke the 500
mark of active members on September 6th. Reaching this plateau in such a
relative short period of time far exceeds my early expectations. In the
beginning I believed that if ECI was to grow to 200 members that
would pretty much take in all who actively collected encased coins. In
those days Tom Cain, Jr. #28
and I often speculated on the matter with neither
of us daring to project the number we have today. With the advent of eBay
and the resurrection of encased manufacturing after the Northern Mint
closed by Penny Press Mint, the hobby continues to attract new collectors
with several finding it worthwhile to support the goals of ECI by
joining. Several coin clubs have issued encased in past three years with
more planning new projects. Fewer business's issued new encased than was
the norm in the past. Several private individuals have issued personal
encased as well. I applaud all those who add new pieces for us to
collect. |

My wife sat down on the couch
next to me as I was flipping channels. She asked, "What's on TV?" I
said, "Dust." And then the fight started.
__________________________________________________________
My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary.
She said, "I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3
seconds." I bought her a bathroom scale. And then the fight started.
____________________________________________________________
When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace
expensive...So I took her to a gas station... And then the fight
started.
____________________________________________________________
My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I
kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a
nearby table.. My wife asked, 'Do you know her?' Yes,' I sighed,
'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after
we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober
since.' 'My God!' says my wife, 'who would think that a person could go
on celebrating that long?' And then the fight started.
____________________________________________________________
I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were alongside the road
and slowly the other driver got out of his car.. You know how sometimes
you just get soooo stressed and little things just seem funny?
Yeah, well I couldn't believe it... he was a DWARF!!! He stormed over to
my car, looked up at me, and shouted, 'I AM NOT HAPPY!' So, I
looked down at him and said, 'Well, then which one are you?' And then
the fight started.
____________________________________________________________
My wife and I are watching "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" while we were
in bed. I turned to her and said, "Do you want to make love?"
"No," she answered. I then said, "Is that your final answer?" She
didn't even look at me this time, simply saying, "Yes." So I said,
"Then I'd like to phone a friend." And then the fight started....
____________________________________________________________
I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my
order first. 'I'll have the strip steak, medium rare, please.' He
said, 'Aren't you worried about the mad cow?' 'Nah, she can order
for herself.' And then the fight started ...
____________________________________________________________
My wife was standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror. She is not
happy with what she sees and says to me, 'I feel horrible; I look old,
fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.' I politely
replied, 'Your eyesight's darn near perfect.' And then the fight started |
